A thought a day №9
You’re competing whether you like it or not.
I was on my way to the gym for another rolling session ready to just have a nice light session. Super-chill just enough to keep making progress, but also slow enough for my body to have some kind of a chance to recover in the process. I got there ready to just have a good time only to be met with a punch choke right against my trachea. Then a triangle choke. Then wtf knows; it was two days ago, what matters is the shit hurt and I am a blue belt on the mat practicing with a brown belt.
Next day I was a blue belt playing with other blue belts, a few whites and a purple or two and two browns. But there was one blue there in particular that just felt like he had to make it a death match. Yet again I was there to just get some nice rolls in to not break the chain and this guy was fighting for gold in his head.
Now, perhaps it would help if I mentioned I train at The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy (Google it.).
The point is, this is a room full of high performers or people that hope to be someday. The idea of a rest day is something we talk about a lot, but honestly, we don’t have a lot of those which means you gotta be on point when you step on those mats because even our easy days aren’t that damn easy.
I once went to a group meeting (pre-covid) about app building when the host said a very interesting statement: “you aren’t just competing against other apps in your space. Your users are comparing their experience with your app with the best apps they use daily.
In the gym we have many sayings but there’s one that has always stuck with me over the years: “don’t let your competition train harder than you.”
As Founders, business owners and even employees it is your job to stay ready to compete with the best of the best no matter what.
