A thought a day No.12

Know who you need to be, when.

“I don’t know who you think you’re talking to, but I am not one of your little friends!”

This is a sentence my mother had to say to me far too many times.

When I was a teen I gave my mother all sorts of reasons to say stuff like this.

Why?

Well, read “The Laws of Human Nature" by Robert Greene for more on that.

But fact of the matter is, it’s how things had to play out for me to be where I am now.

That said, sometimes my mother really is just one of my friends.

I was working a dinner the other night that was a company party.

It was a bunch of coworkers from all over the country that had never all been in the same room before.

As their Personal Chef for the evening I had the joy of getting to sit and watch their dynamic shift out.

You have the partier, the flirt, the rocker, the foodie, the self-improvement and so many personality types.

The one that’s always true is the person to bring me in is the evangelist.

When it comes to building a a startup the founder has to be an evangelist or else you don’t have any glue.

The problem comes when they don’t know when to pull back on it.

Our friend (let’s call her Sharene), was telling her engagement story.

It was beautiful.

Her parents were involved,

Her fiance asked her parents,

He made a mix-tape,there were all the things.

After the story was told the founder did founder things and tied it back to the business.

On one hand that’s great because the business needs to be the center of their world or else it will never grow to its potential.

On the other you could see how the light dimmed in Sharlene’s face as what was her live story turned into yet another company story.

I just wanted to reach out and say “this isn’t the time man.”

But that wasn’t my place.

I’m not the most emotionally intelligent person this world has ever seen.

I commit faux-pas regularly, but I do my best to stay vigilant.

There’s little worse than having a moment we all know should be ours but having it get lost into the big picture.

19 years later, I still text my mom “thank you for not being one of my little friends. I love you.”
