Make your words mean something.

“Here, let me show you what I mean.” — I said

Grasping the pork belly in hand the new cook replied “I got this"

“I’m sorry, that’s about $300 worth of pork belly for the weekend and frankly I don’t trust you like that yet. Let me show you this time then we’ll see about next time.”

I don’t remember what I was that caused it, I don’t even remember who I said it to, but I’ll never forget how the first time I was on the line and said “you can do it, I have faith in you" changed a coworkers whole attitude and how good that felt.

That moment, you learn how important it is to really build up stock in your worth.

Sure, at times I was overly blunt when cooks asked me what I thought about some experimental dish, but they came to expect it from me and their efforts only got stronger.

What I didn’t expect was how much weight giving a person your faith really holds.

Here’s my tip.

Make your faith a thing to be earned.

Don’t say it overtly, but by all means you need to imply it’s not easy to get, there are standards, they are higher than any one else’s but they are attainable.

If someone’s work isn’t up to snuff tell them so, but also show them how it could be worked to meet your guidelines.

Eventually they will start to dial in what you look for and when you finally get to trust someone enough to work in your stead the magic you saying so will create is unimaginable.

I hope this short story helps you in some way.
