My favorite question.

A post inspired by watching #gmfb this morning.

I used to be extremely socially awkward.

I always felt like a burden trying to start conversations.

As if they had something better to do.

This wasn't just with attractive women.

This was with everyone.

If I wanted to talk to you I just assumed you had something better to do.

Then one day I was done.

I needed a way to get over this and now.

So I designed a sort of social experiment.

My goal: talk to strangers.

The Solution: I got a book of writing prompts.

I learned that people like to do favors for people thanks to "How To Win Friends & Influence People" by Dale Carnegie (if you haven't read it yet, get on it.)

So I'd walk up to strangers and ask them for a favor.

The favor: open my book, write in it & sign.

I found people were really receptive to it.

Then I would start asking them questions about what they wrote.

I found that I wasn't just not a burden, but people enjoyed talking to me.

I thought I'd fill the book before I could talk to strangers well,

It didn't even take ten!

Next I wanted to learn how to start a conversation.

So I developed a question to start conversations and that's what birthed this question.

So, are you ready for my favorite question?

What is the one thing you must accomplish before you die?

In this scenario you are on your death bed and a doctor walks up and says "you have two choices: either you die right here and now or you get up and go accomplish your life's goal."

Again, what's the one thing you must accomplish before you die?

This question tells me everything I want to know about a person.

I don't ask everyone.

But when I ask, it matters.

That said: this is me presenting it publicly.

What's your answer?
