Of course as a Chefs we want to stick in the kitchen as long as we can, but when we shift to becoming personal Chefs the biggest challenge is often finding the balance between the fun of the kitchen and designing menus with our clients and the processes that make those promises happen in the background.

It’s my experience that the ability to master these administrative processes is the difference between a Chef that has a business that grows year after year and a Chef stuck struggling month after month until they leave the industry altogether from burnout.
Client Management
Much like how there’s little I’m communicating with someone that’s more insulting than forgetting the name of the person you’re speaking to, there’s little more impressive to a guest than remembering the conversation and the event details of a client you’ve had a conversation with.
This is why personal Chefs must be able to manage their clients effectively, from initial consultation to ongoing communication.
This doesn’t have to be a complicated task. Things as simple as settint clear expectations, maintaining a positive relationship, and providing exceptional customer service are truly all it takes to stand out when it comes to client management.
Scheduling
Effective scheduling is key to running a successful personal Chef business.
I can tell you first hand, the only thing that sucks more than not managing your time effectively to get to a client in time is double booking yourself.
Don’t be that guy, luckily my clients were cool about it at the time, but you don’t want to do it if you can about it.
Being able to manage your schedule is vital for this.
Not sure how? Honestly, just use your calendar.
When you speak to a potential client, mark the day they want on your calendar so that if someone else calls for the same day, you can note who has first dibs. Personally, I give 3 days to make up their mind before the day goes to someone else.
Invoicing and Payments
You must be able to manage you finances effectively, including invoicing clients and accepting payments in a timely manner.
This not only ensures that you are paid for their services and are able to maintain your business, butnit allows you to provide the best possible service to your clients (and hopefully future friends.)
Marketing
In my opinion this is the most difficult part for Chefs to grasp, because marketing is so much more than cooking and pretty pictures.
Marketing is about know who to talk to, when you talk to them, how to talk to them and most importantly, what to talk to them about.
This is in everything from the colors you use, to the neighborhoods you visit and everything in between.
As they say if two products come out solving the same problem, it’s not the one that does it better than will sell best its the one that markets itself better.
If that doesn’t explain the importance of marketing for ya, I just don’t know what will.
Data Privacy and Security
Personal Chefs handle sensitive information about their clients.
This information ranges from dietary restrictions down to where their bathroom is on the lower-level.
That said as Personal Chefs we get a glimpse into the lives of our clients that most never see we learn their homes and the family that lives within it.
For a moment in time we are a part of their family and with that it’s our duty to protect them.
